Seeking Undergraduate Research Assistants in Linguistics and Writing Studies

This position will serve as a research assistant on a Research Initiative Grant from the Conference on College Composition and Communication. The purpose of this grant is to create a website to support Black students’ linguistic agency in the college writing classroom. The website, Students’ Right to Their Own Writing, includes a guide for college writing students and a guide for their instructors. The student in this position will have the opportunity to develop skills in community-based research.

Responsibilities of the position may include:

  • Reviewing and making recommendations for website content
  • Finding relevant materials to share on the website and in related publications
  • Conducting or co-conducting focus groups with students to evaluate the guides
  • Analyzing data from focus groups to determine revisions and updates to the guides
  • Searching and summarizing the most recent research literature on African American English and language variation in college writing and on writing feedback and grading
  • Other research assistance as needed

Position Details

  • Dates: 07/15/21 – 05/01/22
  • Pay: $14/hour
  • Hours: total of 70-100 hours
  • Location: Remote, will be required to attend meetings on Zoom

Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the study of African American English
  • Experience in library research and/or original data collection (including class assignments)
  • 3.2 minimum GPA
